Botanical Name: Arctostaphylos 'Green Sphere'
Common Name: No common name
Type of Plant: dicot/shrub
Character evergreen

Habit of Growth:
Overall Shape a very distinctive manzanita, noted for its dense rounded and symmetrical canopy; the plant eventually spreads at the base to become broadly mounded with gnarled branches
Height 2' - 4' (5')
Spread equal or more
Growth Rate slow

Environment:
Exposure outdoors prefers sunny locations near the coast; tolerates some shade at hotter inland sites
Soil thrives in most well-draining soils; tolerates ample watering
Hardiness hardy (zones 6-9, 14-24): best in warm coastal-plain areas

Morphology:
Leaves pinnate, alternate-opposite, closely crowded on red stems; oval-elliptic, 1/2"-3/4" long, bright green
Flowers white, small, urn-shaped, in crowded clusters; mostly in late winter (Feb.-March)
Fruit if present, a small reddish-brown pome

Propagation:
softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings

Usage:
an excellent small-medium sized filler, different from most manzanitas in its very uniform shape - adapts well to 'formal' theme gardens; with age, the plant can become an accent shrub for its dense rugged appearance and branch structure.

Landscape Care:
Watering prefers an occasional deep-soak irrigation; avoid lawn watering
Fertilizing little is needed after establishment
Pruning none is required; a light tip-pruning enhances its 'formal' look; can selectively thin to display branch structure
Pests/Diseases relatively free; Manzanita branch die-back if over-watered
Special Conditions/Other can be used as hedge material

Origin: cultivar of A. edmundsii
